WEM

Mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086, Wem has a history stretching back into the mists of time, when it was known as "Wamm".

The town occupies an excellent location on the Shropshire Plain, with good road and rail links to the other towns and villages in the area.

Over the years it has been home to a number of important and influential figures, including the first Baron of Wem William Pantulf, Sir Thomas Adams and Judge Jeffreys (the hanging judge).

During the reign of Queen Victoria, Henry Eckford used his knowledge of plant cross-breeding to produce much improved varieties of sweet-pea in the town. His achievement is celebrated each year by the Eckford Sweet Pea Society of Wem , who hold an annual sweet pea show in July.

Wem is the home of the modern sweet pea, celebrated in the town's logo.
