ELLESMERE

The most westerly town within North Shropshire, Ellesmere has a definite "Welsh" feel about it.

Its position beside the largest of the area's meres is idyllic, and its status as an important trading centre dates back to before the canal era, when Ellesmere was a main point for the distribution of goods.

Just as the town looked set to become even more important with the development of its canal link to "Ellesmere Port", the railway came along and quickly became the dominant transport system.

Which means that while Ellesmere may have missed out on growing ever larger, modern-day North Shropshire has the benefit of this delightful town with picturesque walks, a very strong wildlife ethos but with a tourism sector that has managed to avoid becoming too commercialised.

The Wharf, Ellesmere - once a thriving business hub, now the location for Ellesmere's continued expansion.
